MANHATTAN YOUTH CENTER

ABOUT

CLIENT: Manhattan Youth Downtown Community Center
ARCHITECT: Mancini Duffy
LOCATION: New York, NY
YEAR: 2013

Located in Tribeca, the Manhattan Youth cellar facilities provide after school programs for children, from cooking to computer science. At the end of 2012, the cellar was seriously damaged by Hurricane Sandy. MRD was brought in to provide lighting solutions that would bring new life into the space.

MRD sought to create a playful, inspirational space where the lighting not only provided required luminance, but also made the children happy. Each room has a themed color and themed fixtures that pay homage to that room, and each space feels like a different experience. From molecule shaped pendants in the science room to surface mounted cubes in the sculpture room, each area lets the children’s imagination run free.
